One of my favorite “fast food” places and “wish I had bought their stock at $30” is Chipotle Mexican Grill. They are currently beta testing a new vegan tofu option called Sofritas.
“Sofritas, shredded tofu braised with chipotle chilis, roasted poblanos and a blend of aromatic spices, is made with organic, non-GMO tofu from Oakland’s Hodo Soy. Chipotle expects Sofritas to appeal to vegetarian and vegan customers, as well as those who are looking for an exciting new taste.”
It is only at a handful of locations in the SF Bay Area which luckily includes my Chipotle near the HP Pavilion in downtown San Jose.
I had tried a sample a few weeks back when it first came out but opted to go with my usual chicken bowl at that time. Fast forward a few weeks later, I was feeling a little more adventurous and decided to have a Sofritas bowl with my usual cilantro-lime rice, fajita vegetables, tomato salsa, red chili salsa and sour cream.
It was delicious. Texturally, it is similar to scrambled eggs but doesn’t have any eggy taste but rather a pleasantly balanced spice taste to it. You can taste the chipotle and poblanos which has a nice smoky taste with a kick of heat in it.
It is nice to see Chipotle innovating and opening up more food options for the vegetarian/vegan crowd.
